Construction of the iconic Caddo Indian beehive style grass thatched house was recently revived after the tribe was moved to Oklahoma in 1859. Methods of building in modern times differ considerably compared to European contact time when explorers described in detail the full process of organization, collecting materials, and erecting the structure. Phil Cross, Caddo Indian, compares in detail the construction process of former times to that of modern times. The content of Cross’ paper that was commissioned by the Texas State Historical Association in 2016 includes: Table of Contents: I. Organization Ii. Harvesting thatch III. Harvesting poles IV. Post Hole Patterns at Caddo Mounds V. Pole treatment for preservation VI. Bending poles VII. Cordage VIII. Center pole IX. Thatching method X. Materials Required This paper is available by request by email to chronicles. americanIndian@gmail.com.
